Ford's Mustang-inspired Electric Crossover is Coming Sooner Than You Think

After it was confirmed that Lincoln will base its first electric car on top of the chassis of the future Mustang-Inspired electric crossover, now Ford actually laid out its plan for the introduction of that Mustang-inspired crossover. A “Full Year Earnings Review and 2019 Outlook” document, released only hours ago, shows that Ford will reveal an all-new “all-electric utility this year and put it on sale in 2020.” This will basically be the first car developed by Team Edition - a Ford subdivision focused on development of electric cars.

Ford has been playing with the electric Mustang-inspired crossover idea for months now. First Ford planned to name it the Mach 1, but after the fan backlash at the mention of that name, the company swiftly trademarked the Mach E and the Mach-E nameplates. It is not yet sure if the crossover will bear that name at all, but it seems that everything points in that direction.

A Bunch Of Electric Fords On The Streets By 2022

The man in charge of the development of the full line of Ford electric vehicles is Darren Palmer, Ford Team Edison Global Product Development Director. He is the right guy for the job as he actually drives the Shelby GT350R, because, why the heck not? A guy that enjoys that gem is sure to give us the future we deserve.

“It’s exciting to know that my stint leading development of the next-generation Mustang actually comes full circle as we get ready to launch our electric Mustang-inspired utility. I, for one, can’t wait to have one — side-by-side — with my Shelby GT350R,” he said sometime after he joined the Team Edison.

With $11 billion (yup, billion) investment over the course of the next four to five years, Team Edison plans to craft a lineup of electric and hybridized vehicles (including the Mustang hybrid and the electric F-150) by 2022.

What Will The New Mustang-Inspired Ford Electric Crossover Be Like?

Ford Vice President of Autonomous and Electric Vehicles, Sherif Marakby, has previously stated “Throwing a charger in the trunk of a vehicle and sending customers on their way isn’t enough to help promote the viability of electric vehicles. We are redesigning the ownership experience to ensure it addresses customer pain points that currently hold back broad adoption.”

Ford is “redesigning the ownership experience”? What’s that?

In short, Ford hints at seamless and simple charging process and ease of use. I can only imagine that Team Edison is working on some kind of a fast charging process, or fast wireless induction charging. Maybe even a really nice autonomous driving system, at least as good as the Super Cruise in Cadillac vehicles. That would greatly ease the recharge and use process I imagine.

But I am not sure.

What I am fairly sure of is that we have seen the first glimpse of this Mustang-Inspired crossover in this video at 0.37:

Furthermore, the shadowy teaser of the rear end promises clear Mustang design links, while the spy shots of the early prototypes in the wild show that the crossover will be sized similarly as the Ford Blazer. Nevertheless, I can’t wait to see it. Personally, I would not mind even if Ford went with the Mach 1 name, but the Mach E would do nicely too. Although I must add, the Mach E isn’t final. It may get a completely different name after all.

Final Thoughts

It is time for this to happen in the Ford world as well and where better than on an advanced tech-packed electric crossover based on the most iconic coupe. It will be a cool addition to Ford's future lineup that will include a number of cool names - like the Bronco. Good years ahead of us, it seems.
