As far as car capers go, this one is for the books. Four Tesla vehicles were recently stolen from the automaker’s dealership in Salt Lake City, Utah before being recovered in a span of just a few hours. Turns out, police recovered all four Teslas from four different thieves, some of whom claim to be part of the Tesla family. Bizarre? You better believe it.

The Looney Tunes-like episode took a narrative twist when a man local media identified as Shane Smith pulled up behind a trooper’s car in a Tesla and told an officer that some guy gave the Tesla to him and that he wanted to give him back. Confused, the officer impounded the Tesla and brought Smith with him to the dealership, only to discover that the store had been burglarized.

Smith then admitted that he arrived at the store earlier just after the crime happened and decided to take the key fobs and the cars because he thought he’d be “allowed” to do so. At that point, the police began looking for other stolen Teslas, and it didn’t take long for them to recover the cars. One thief was apprehended after a car chase that ended because power from the car’s battery pack ran out. Two other people were also arrested driving stolen Teslas, but not after claiming that “someone named Tesla” handed them the key fobs for the cars.

Police believe that the thieves are referring to Nikola Tesla, the famous physicist, and inventor who died in 1943 without any offspring. Either way, the thieves don’t appear to be the sharpest knives in the drawer to come up with an excuse like that. According to local media, one of them even took a $49,500 check made out to Tesla and put his name to endorse it on the back. The crime is now reportedly being called a “coordinated theft,” which is odd itself because nothing about it sounds coordinated.
