Every now and then an automaker really steps it up and comes up with something that shakes the very foundation of the automotive market. And, that’s exactly what GMC has done with the tailgate and bed of the new, 2019 GMC Sierra. Not only does it come with a new tailgate that is unlike anything we’ve ever seen but it also features a new bed design that sheds weight while increasing durability and cargo room. It’s truly innovative and has set a new standard in the full-size truck segment. There’s so much more to say about it, though, so let me explain to you why the new Sierra is about to have both Ford and Ram in damage control mode as they scramble to catch up with the new king of the industry.

Does the GMC Sierra Really Have a Carbon Fiber Bed?

Yes and No. See, the bed itself is made from roll-formed, high-strength steel. GMC went the extra mile, however, and used a revised alloy to improve strength – supposedly by 50 percent. Where the carbon fiber comes in, is inside, where the interior panels of the bed, or the “box” as you probably know it, are composed of a special carbon-fiber composite. GMC calls it “the Carbon Pro” and says the bed offers resistance to scratching, corrosion, and denting – something that should make it the most durable box available in the Sierra’s respective segment. Adding to the excitement here, it’s not only the strongest box GMC has offered, but it’s also more than 60 pounds lighter than its steel counterpart.

2019 GMC Sierra Cargo Space vs Ford and Ram

According to GMC, the 2019 GMC Sierra has 63 cubic-feet of storage space. That beats out the 2018 Ford F-150’s short bed by 10.2 cubic feet and the Ram 1500’s short bed by 12.7 cubic-feet. And, to really put that into perspective, the Sierra’s short box actually has more than the Ford F-150’s 6.5-foot box and the Ram 1500’s 6’4” box as well.

2019 GMC Sierra Bed Features

Outside of the new tailgate design and that carbon fiber box, the new Sierra has a couple of other good things going for it. For instance, there’s a new 110-Volt outlet available for those that need power on the go and GMC has added additional tie-downs. So, factor in the 62-pound weight loss, the extra tie-downs, available electrical outlet, and that new tailgate and you’ve got a truly innovative truck that is completely unmatched by the current competition.

2019 GMC Sierra Tailgate Features

The tailgate was the Sierra’s real headline. This thing takes the tailgate we know and love moves it into a whole new stage of evolution. First off, it opens and closes itself at the press of a button. But, that just isn’t enough. The inside of the tailgate lifts up to provide a stop for materials sitting inside. The top center portion can fold down, allowing one to easily get closer to the bed from the rear to grab items from the inside. This feature also doubles, when you fold out the step, making ingress and egress that much easier on the fly. Finally, with the tailgate in the closed position, that folding portion can be laid down make the rear-loading process easier or to serve as a workbench.

Conclusion

So, there you have it. GMC has really set the bar as far as utility goes and it’s almost high enough that you can kind of feel bad for brands like for and Ram that just recently revamped their trucks as well. What happens now is hard to say, but with features like these, not to mention the plush cabin and powerful drivetrains, Ford and Ram will have no choice but the step their games up. I guess you could say that this is what happens when market demand shifts toward trucks and SUVs. With these vehicles being more profitable, automakers can sink more time, money, and energy into their designs. The 2019 GMC Sierra, my friends, is clear evidence to that and a statement to the world that it will reign supreme in the work of trucks, whether you’re looking for luxury, utility, or practicality – it certainly covers all bases.
