Honda may be late to the electrification revolution, but it’s not wasting its time catching up to the party. The Japanese automaker is bringing its first mass-produced electric car to the Beijing Motor Show. It’s called the Everus concept, and it serves as a sign of things to come for Honda as it starts aggressively pushing its own EV agenda for the future.
For a first offering, Honda’s Everus EV Concept actually looks like it’s ready to roll out of the assembly line. Details are still being kept under wraps until its official debut, but the size and proportion of the vehicle draw a few similarities with the Honda HR-V. It even has the weird rear door handles that are located on the C-pillar.
The concept does have a lot of visual promise, especially if Honda doesn’t deviate too far away from it once the development of the production model starts. That’s actually happening later this year, which is a little surprising considering the quick turnaround time from its debut in Beijing this week to the start of production in the latter stages of the year.
It’s entirely possible that Honda’s rushing to develop the concept so it can jumpstart its new Everus EV brand with venture partner, Chinese automaker GAC. Given how crowded this market is expected to be in the coming years, Honda’s not messing around anymore. The automaker has big plans for the concept beyond using it as a springboard for its future EV offerings. That’s because, in addition to selling it as is in the Chinese market, Honda also plans to roll out the model through a car-sharing service that’s offered by Reachstar, a Chinese company that specializes in providing car share services.
Whatever the intentions are, expectations are high for the Honda Everus Concept now that we know it’s making its debut at the Beijing Auto Show. If it ends up being as successful as Honda hopes it’d be, it could usher in a new generation of Honda EVs that can help the automaker transition seamlessly into this brave new world of untapped potential and possibilities.
