Honda has unveiled its new Passport crossover designed to slot in its range between the CR-V and the Pilot. It rides on the same underpinnings as the Pilot, but it comes with considerably shorter rear overhang, extra ground clearance, and additional body cladding to make off-roading less stressful.

Unlike the larger Pilot, the Passport doesn’t have a three-row seven-seater option, and Honda is really marketing it more as a lifestyle vehicle for outdoorsy types who need it to get up the odd mountain track.

It also looks like quite a wide vehicle, and in combination with its boxy, upright stance it certainly has its own character. Its interior looks nearly identical to that of the Pilot, borrowing its infotainment screen, digital gauge cluster, confusing button selector for the automatic gearbox, and many of the trim panels.

We got to see the Passport at its official unveiling at the LA Auto Show 2018 where we got a quick look around and inside the new Honda crossover. Buyers will be able to order it with standard front- or optional all-wheel drive, and when equipped with the latter it will have a towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds. It should also be a bit quicker and more efficient compared to the Pilot too, since it will use the same powertrain but in a slightly smaller, lighter package.
