The Chicago Auto Show is now open, but for most European automakers, the event they’re preparing for is the next one on the calendar. The Geneva Motor Show is regarded as one of the biggest auto shows of the year. Every automaker worth its salt attends the event. That includes BMW, which is already in line to debut the new X4. Now, whispers abound that another model is coming to the auto show. If these whispers hold true, we could be on the receiving end of seeing a new, 8 Series-based concept from the M Division.
Word of this mysterious concept comes by way of BMW Blog, which said that the concept will be based on the 8 Series and M8 platform. It stopped short of confirming the car as an M8 Concept, though it did say that it will be “different in style than the M8 Coupe previewed so far.”
I realize that’s not much to go on, but we did see a heavily camouflaged Bimmer that had some striking similarities to the 8 Series Concept that made its debut in May 2017. The test mule has yet to shed its camo skin so there’s a good chance that if this debut is happening, it could be the same car.
From what we saw, the M8 prototype has the physical tools to be the performance car we’ve all been dreaming of. It featured a steady diet of track-and-hoon M features, including larger air intakes, beefed up brakes, and a quad tailpipe sports exhaust configuration. Design-wise, the test mule also came with an upright front grille and thicker headlamps compared to the 8 Series Concept.
Needless to say, it’s exciting times for fans of BMW, specifically those who have dreamt of seeing an M8 come to fruition. It’s never been done before so there’s a little bit of history attached to this car in the event it is, in fact, a concept version of the M8. Fortunately, all this speculation will come to a head soon because Bimmer is expected to reveal more details in the coming weeks. The clock is ticking, folks. Will we or won't we get a BMW M8?
