Gearheads have generally mourned the loss of Top Gear, the TV show->ke4741 that set the bar for automotive programming. But even though the show was canceled, nobody really thought that we would never again see the hosts reviewing cars. But here is James May reviewing Ferrari's->ke252 latest, the 488 GTB, for the Sunday Times. This is generally pretty good news for Top Gear->ke1860 fans, although it would be difficult not to address the fact that the production value of this video->ke278 isn't even close to what you may be used to from Top Gear. Still, there are some nice shots of the Ferrari on winding roads in the Italian countryside, something you definitely would have gotten from Top Gear.

The review itself isn't all that in depth, and a lot of it focuses on the car's looks. You wouldn't expect a review from Captain Slow to be all power slides and engine noise, although he does manage to give us a few laps around the Fiorano test track. It leaves a bit to be desired, but it's always good to see May reviewing cars, and hopefully there will soon be a better outlet for him to do so.

As May points out in the video, the 488 GTB is a nod to the 308 GTB, the first road-going mid-engine V-8 Ferrari. But one could argue that it also shares a bit with the 288 GTO, the turbocharged model based on the 308. Of course, the 288 was built for racing (even though it never actually did), and Ferrari's other previous turbocharged models also weren't this mainstream. That makes the 488 GTB special, and nice as it was to see May's initial thoughts on it, we're still looking forward to a more thorough look at the car.
