This year’s Indianapolis 500 is getting off to an ominous start. Just a day after Helio Castroneves was involved in a frightening crash that saw his car spin and do a backflip on the exit of Turn 1, Josef Newgarden suffered a similar crash in almost the same part of the track. Like Castroneves, Newgarden escaped the crash uninjured (even though he did appear more shaken after being pulled from the race car->ke148), and he was back on the track Friday in a backup car for more practice.

Both Castroneves and Newgarden were piloting Chevrolet->ke199 race cars, and Pippa Mann also had a big crash earlier in the week in her Honda.->ke34 Honda and Chevrolet introduced new aero packages this season, but at this point, there’s no telling if the manufacturer-specific aero package had anything to do with the separate incidents. It actually looks like Newgarden’s car flipped as a result of the violent impact with the wall, while Castroneves’ obviously got airborne after getting spun around. Either way, the crashes were a result of getting loose coming out of Turn 1.

With the cars set up for practice, only time will tell if there are any improvements when the cars hit the track in qualifying or race trim. Qualifying is this weekend with the 99th running of the Indy 500 taking place on May 24th.
