Just as quickly as people got excited about the Porsche 911 GT2 RS comes the collective groans from a lot of these people who missed out on the new range-topping 911. It didn’t take too long for it to happen, but now it’s official: the new 911 GT2 RS is sold out. All 1,000 of them.

Word of the sports car’s availability, or lack thereof, was first reported by Auto Bild. According to the German news outlet, the limited-run 911 GT2 RS already has owners for each of the 1,000 units Porsche plans to build. It’s not a surprising development to say the least, but the quick-strike nature of how it sold out is a little curious considering that the GT2 RS made quite the unexpected debut during the Forza Motorsport 7 event last week. Either Porsche had already taken orders for the car before launching it or customers started tripping over themselves in order to confirm their orders. Whatever the case may be, it looks like those who missed out on the car will have to settle for the re-sell market if they want to get their hands on the 911 GT2 RS. Considering that the car is priced at about €260,000, or roughly $290,000 based on current exchange rates, don’t be surprised if an opportunistic owner tries to shoot up the car’s price once he takes delivery of it later this year.

Hardly a surprise considering what the Porsche 911 GT2 RS is capable of

When Porsche decided to unveil the 911 GT2 RS at the Forza Motorsport 7 event, it probably expected to get the reaction that it got. That’s usually on par for the course when dealing with a car that packs a staggering 700 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, making it the most powerful version among the current-generation Porsche 911s in the market today.

We also had an idea that the car would sell out quickly. That’s always been the case for 911 models of the ilk of the GT2 RS. Remember, the previous 911 to sport the GT2 RS badge was released in 2011 and was limited to just 500 units. That one sold out faster than it took me to finish writing this sentence. Porsche may have allocated 1,000 units for the latest version of the 911 GT2 RS, but as it turns out, even doubling the total volume for the car wasn’t enough to mitigate for the incredible demand for the sports car.

Then again, should we be surprised? I know I’m not. The GT2 RS name is traditionally reserved for the range-topping model of each generation of the Porsche 911 so you can imagine the kind of demand this car would have among enthusiasts. And it’s not like Porsche didn’t give them reason to get excited for the sports car. On top of boasting 700 ponies and 553 pound-feet of torque, the 911 GT2 RS also features a dramatic aerodynamic profile -- that massive rear wing is, well, massive -- a more hardcore chassis setup, and performance credentials that allow it to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds before peaking at a top speed of 212 mph. In other words, the 911 GT2 RS is a car worth fighting over. Perhaps that’s why all 1,000 units are already spoken for, even with a price tag approaching $300,000.
