It's been less than two weeks since Volkswagen announced that it will skip the 2018 Paris Motor Show, and Lamborghini has now revealed that it will join its parent company in not setting up a booth at one of the world's most important car shows. Volkswagen and Lambo are only two of many automakers that won't show up in Paris, including Ford, Infiniti Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Opel, Subaru, and Volvo.

This isn't the first time when Lamborghini skipped Paris, though. The Italian firm also did it in 2016, alongside Bentley, Aston Martin, and Rolls-Royce. But while it's not entirely surprising for carmakers to pass on certain auto shows, it has become a trend in recent years. Volvo, for instance, said that it's planning to quit auto shows altogether and organize its own events for new car launches. In addition, BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz announced that they will skip the 2019 Detroit Auto Show and display new products at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. CES occurs a few days earlier in January, and it has become a big event for new car technologies.

Are Auto Shows Dying?

While it may seem like it, they're not. Automakers are simply embracing the 21st century and the wonders of the widely available internet. Back in the day, when there was no or limited access to internet, auto shows were a great place to show new cars and technologies to customers and the media. Now, high-speed internet enables companies to showcase their new models online, and some opt to do so rather than spend millions for a booth in Geneva, Paris, Detroit or New York. Auto shows will be there for decades to come; it's the approach that will change.

Is the 2018 Paris Motor Show still worth it?

Definitely! While some automakers will skip the event, several have announced their attendance. The list includes major companies like Jaguar, Land Rover, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Audi, and Porsche. The event will also include cars from Peugeot, Kia, Hyundai, Citroen, Smart, Suzuki, Skoda, and Seat. As usual, it will also feature a number of concept cars, so it's definitely worth it if you're planning on buying tickets.
