Lamborghini's Preparing For A New One-Off/Limited Edition Model

New beast is all set to follow in the footsteps of the Aventador J, Veneno Roadster, and most recently, the Centenario

When it comes to building one-off supercars, nobody does it quite like Lamborghini. From past examples like the Reventon and the Sesto Elemento to more recent offerings like the Aventador J, the Veneno Roadster, and the Centenario, no automaker has enthralled our imaginations and lamented our lots in life like the Raging Bull. I could wax poetic about all these exotics, but there’s far more pressing news to discuss. Apparently, Lamborghini isn’t done building one-offs just yet. There’s a new one on the way and no less than Lambo’s director of research and development Maurizio Reggiani confirmed as much to Car Advice.

Reggiani didn’t reveal much about this new one-off, and for good reason. What he did say was the company is planning to present its customers with a new one-off (really a “small number of cars” in Lamborghini’s dictionary) supercar that will “introduce some new technology” into the fold. What “new technology” exactly means is the intriguing element of this new supercar, on top of a whole list of other cutting-edge features. As far as a timetable is concerned, Reggiani didn’t spill the beans on that front either, possibly because he didn’t want to take any attention away from the company’s most important new car in recent years, the Lamborghini Urus SUV. That model is scheduled to make its world debut on December 4, 2017. Given the timeframe, it’s possible that this new limited edition Lamborghini will be the automaker’s main attraction at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.

Brace yourselves for something epic to arrive next year

Every time an automaker makes bold promises, it’s always a good idea to have a default reaction of skepticism. Best not to expect much, especially since expectations often fall flat in this industry. There are exceptions to that rule and Lamborghini is one of them. If Lambo says it’s planning on building a new limited-edition supercar, you believe it because history paints numerous pictures of the Raging Bull coming through on its word.

Remember the Reventon? The Sesto Elemento? The Aventador J? The Veneno Roadster? The Centenario? All these cars were promised as limited edition models and Lamborghini lived up to its word as all of them were launched and sold to an exclusive clientele. The Centenario is the latest example of these models. It showed up at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show where it was touted as a special supercar that was created specifically to celebrate the 100th birthday of Lamborghini founder Ferruccio Lamborghini. It wasn’t technically a one-off as 20 coupe and 20 roadster models were created, though all 40 units were quickly spoken for about as quickly as it took the supercar to hit 60 mph from a standstill (2.8 seconds, by the way).

So what can we expect from this new limited edition model that Lambo’s preparing? Hard to say at this point, but I have a feeling that the company’s new Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory in Washington will have some part to play in.

Just don’t expect a hybrid hypercar in the vein of what Aston Martin and Mercedes-AMG are doing with the Valkyrie and the Project One. Apparently, Lambo already did something like that with the Reventon, so says Reggiani. “Lamborghini, first of all, was the one that invented this kind of car with the Reventon around 10 years ago, more or less,” he told Car Advice. “We are the ones that did this. For this reason, we are not the followers with this.”
