Back at the 2015 L.A. Auto Show,->ke211 we got a look at the 2016 Lamborghini Huracán LP 580-2. It is essentially the entry-level Huracán->ke4345 model and is indeed rear-wheel drive. A lot of us were hoping the Lamborghini Aventador would also be available with a rear-wheel drive option, but apparently, that isn’t going to happen. According to Lamborghini,->ke44 the Aventador has to be all-wheel drive due to the amount of power transmitted to the wheels, and therefore, a rear-wheel version has been ruled out.

Maurizio Reggiani, the R&D director for Lamborghini, says, “The Aventador->ke3624 can only be four-wheel drive because we have so much power and torque to manage; only with four driven wheels are you able to manage this.” Apparently, the decision has to do with the “state of the art of the control systems” that are used on the car today, necessitating the need for all-wheel drive.

The Aventador has a rather high power-to-weight ratio, which could make driving it in a rear-wheel drive configuration challenging, but not impossible. In all reality, the Aventador only has a 118 horsepower advantage over the base Huracán, and there is speculation out there that some aerodynamic modifications would make a rear-wheel drive Aventador more than doable. Who knows, maybe someday we’ll see a production form of the car came in a RWD configuration, but as it stands now, it won’t be anytime soon.

Why it matters

The fact that Lambo won’t produce a rear-wheel drive Aventador is a bit troubling. Lamborghini claims that so much power and torque can only be managed by sending it to all four wheels, but is that really the case? Sure, the engineers rely on computer simulations, but I think this is Lamborghini just trying to play it safe. What it really comes down to, in my opinion, is that Lamborghini doesn’t trust owners to drive the car properly. With great power, comes great responsibility. If you can’t handle driving a car with that much power delivered to two wheels, you shouldn’t be in the car to begin with. A good driver knows the limit of what he’s driving and how to stay on the safe side of that very thin line.
