This Detroit Auto Show has been a wild one. Infiniti->ke36 announced two new cars, Ford->ke31 rolled out a new 2017 Raptor, the 2017 GT, and the 2016 Shelby GT350R Mustang, and now we have Land Rover jumping in to let the world know that it is bringing diesel engines to the States. Both the Range Rover->ke469 and the Range Rover Sport->ke4087 are going to be offered in a Td6 trim that will go on sale in the fall of 2015.

The Td6 engine is a 3.0-liter V-6 diesel engine that makes use of turbocharging to push horsepower to a healthy 254 ponies, with torque coming in at a hearty 440 pound-feet. Best yet, all 440 pounds is available at just 1,750 rpm. Lovely.

While the thick wave of low-end torque can be great for off-road uses, the real joy of going with diesel is fuel economy. Preliminary fuel mileage numbers for the Range Rover Sport Td6 are 22 mpg city, 28 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined. That may not sound like great numbers, but remember these are Land Rovers; that combined figure is a 32-percent increase over the supercharged gasoline V-6. Range is now up to 658 miles.

We also shouldn’t forget about Land Rovers sibling Jaguar->ke39 in this news either. We already know that Jaguar is bringing the new XE->ke3138 sedan to market with a 2.0-liter diesel, but expect a modified version of this new Td6 motor to find a home in the freshly announced Jaguar F-Pace SUV.

Why it Matters

Diesel power is not the most popular propulsion system in the U.S., but sale of clean-diesel cars, trucks and SUVs was up by a whopping 25 percent as of mid-2014, besting the 4.2-percent growth of the rest of the auto industry by a long shot. That huge jump combined with Range Rover buyers not being your typical car and SUV buyers means that these two models will likely sell rather well. This is especially true for buyers who want decent performance, above average fuel economy and plenty of low-end grunt.
