I know this title could give some ‘Stang lovers diarrhea, but you’ve read that right. First of all, there will be a rebadged Mustang-inspired EV Crossover by Ford, and then Lincoln will use the same platform to create its own car.

That’s the order of things nowadays, and we should actually be happy. Team Edison, a team Jim Hackett formed when he was appointed as Head of Ford, looks for a number of ways to create a sustainable EV business case and cool cars/crossovers at that. Actually, Ford plans to invest 10 billion of its money in EV research and development by 2022. That’s a lot of money spent fast. Something magical could come out of all of that.

Future Mustang-Inspired Crossover To Serve As A Basis For The First Lincoln EV

As we all know, Lincoln and Ford are sharing basically everything. Why not the EV technology? What I find curious about all of this is the fact that it is unlikely to expect Ford and Lincoln to use any of Volkswagen's developed EV technology for its first EVs. After the two giants announced their partnership, I was expecting exactly that kind of EV alliance.

Nevertheless, the all-electric Lincoln is coming, and it will look nothing like the Ford electric car. Thanks to electric vehicle nature, Ford and Lincoln can create completely different looking vehicles on the same drivetrain setup. I have a theory that the worldwide EV push isn’t just about efficiency and zero emission movement, but about massive development and production drops that manufacturers can achieve compared to ICE vehicles.

“You can make beautiful vehicles in different ways,” Kumar Galhotra, Head of Ford’s North American Operations and former Boss of Lincoln said to AutomotiveNews. “The BEV technology gives us so much freedom to sculpt that vehicle exactly how we want it. We’re going to create elegant Lincoln BEVs.”

Final Thoughts

The all-electric Lincoln is expected to appear in 2020, and I can’t wait to see it. Now, Volkswagen and Ford did disclose their relationship but are still kinda coy about it. I may only infer that at least some of Volkswagen's tech will end up in future Ford EVs. The company plans to introduce six electric models by 2022. This first Lincoln EV will be one of them.

Apart from the all-electric Lincolns and Fords, the company is working on a hybrid Mustang, a hybrid F-150, and an all-electric F-150. We are in for quite a few interesting years when it comes to Ford, aren’t we!? We will need a lot of candy to swallow it all with.
