Five years ago, you could count on one hand the number of companies that we’re fully invested in electrification. Now, there’s a new one everyday that’s promising the world to anybody who’s willing to listen. We’ve talked about companies like Faraday Future, NextEV, and, of course, Tesla. Today, we shine the spotlight on Lucid Motors, the same company that once called itself Atieva before adopting the Lucid name just last month. The California-based electric car manufacturer is in the headlines because it has finally released the first official image of the all-electric sedan that it’s been hyping up for quite some time now.

To be clear, the sedan doesn’t have an official name yet; it only goes by the codename Atvus. But, that’s neither here nor there at this point because the important thing is that the sedan is making its debut at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show dressed in a unique camouflage finish that still doesn’t point us in the direction of anything specific about the model.

Fortunately, the camouflage isn’t thick or obstructive enough to prevent us from creating a picture in our heads on what the Atvus will look like when it finally arrives in production form. The most obvious design quality at this point is the car’s size, which is to say that it’s not as long as the BMW 7 Series and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, two cars that Lucid Motors’ projects as two of the Atvus’ direct competitors. Just as important is the proposed front section of the car. We don’t get a clear picture of it, but the side profile does show a thin headlight design that bears some similarities to the Aston Martin Lagonda Taraf and a sleek roofline that highlights the model’s fastback design.

There’s obviously a lot more we need to learn about the Atvus before it hits the market in 2018. Hopefully, we get to see more of the car’s design and maybe even more of the interior and, you know, specific performance details. I don’t know if we’re getting all of that in one drop, but at least a few details would be nice.

Any official info, Lucid Motors?

Shouldn’t it be time for Lucid Motors to give us the scoop on the Atvus? I mean, if it’s not going to announce the model’s official name, it might as well provide official details on what we can expect from the car.

Right now, the most we know comes by way of Motor Trend, which recently paid a visit to the company’s facility and learned that the Atvus will be powered by two electric motors - one in the front, one in the back - that will produce 400 and 600 horsepower, respectively, bringing its total in the neighborhood of 1,000 horsepower. That’s a very big number - bigger even than the Tesla Model S P100D, the car that realistically will be the Atvus’ chief rival. Unfortunately, those numbers have yet to be confirmed by anybody from Lucid Motors so at the end of the day, we still don’t know enough about the model to understand its true potential. There’s also that other “expectation” - a 300+ mile range - that’s also unverified.

It’s a very impressive number but until we get official details about the model, we’re going to be running in circles trying to figure out how we really feel about this model. Hopefully, those details arrive sooner than later.
