Unlike most automakers, Mazda is one of the few companies that have yet to offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. That’s about to change, though, because the Japanese car brand is finally relenting. Beginning with the 2018 Mazda 6 that will hit dealerships this summer, Mazda will finally offer either Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. In the case of the 6, all trims except for the base Sport model will carry the apps as standard equipment.

It’s actually a bit surprising that it took Mazda this long to start offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on its vehicles. But they’re finally coming. That’s all that matters at this point.

Details are still sketchy on whether Apple and Google integration would also be offered on other Mazda models, but at this point, it would be very surprising if they aren’t offered. A lot of the companies automakers are already knee-deep in using the apps. Likewise, there is an increasing number of customers that have placed the apps as one of their requirements in buying a new car. It makes sense for Mazda to jump into the deep end and start offering CarPlay or Auto across its entire range. The sooner, the better, too.

Just in case anyone’s interested, the 2018 Mazda6 will be the first model to feature the apps. If you’re interested, the new 6 starts at a price of $21,950, but if you’re interested in one that comes with Carplay and Auto support, you’ll need to aim higher and at least get the $25,700 Touring model. That’s where the apps are going to be offered, presumably for free.

That’s good news. At least Mazda isn’t following in Ferrari’s footsteps and asking for $4,249 for Apple CarPlay integration. That’s a win in the customer service department for the Japanese automaker.
