The 2016 McLaren 570S and 2016 McLaren 540C are only the beginning for McLaren’s->ke284 Sports Series->ke4981 of entry-level sports cars.->ke506 The company announced today that two new Sports Series body styles are on the way, the first coming in 2016 and the second in 2017. The first is likely to be the McLaren Gran Turismo we covered recently.

The Gran Turismo will be a more luxurious take on the 570S->ke4924, with a more cosseting ride calibrated for long-distance drives, and a full-glass panoramic roof that allows improved storage space and visibility. Expect the interior to have comfier, less sport-oriented seats and more leather and Alcantara surfaces. The 563-horsepower twin-turbo V-8 from the 570S is likely to be carried over unchanged, but the overall ride quality will be softer. Expect the Gran Turismo to cost around $200,000 when it’s introduced in 2016.

As for the second 2017 model, that’s anyone’s guess, but a 570S Spider or stripped-out road-racer variant both seem likely. Like the 2015 McLaren 650S Spider, the 570S Spider would use a two-piece mechanical folding hardtop. Thanks to the ultra-stiff MonoCell carbon-fiber tub used in all McLarens, no chassis reinforcement would be required, and the convertible mechanism would only add about 90 pounds to the overall curb weight.

As for the road racer, let’s speculatively call it the 620R for the time being. Expect a pumped-up version of the same twin-turbo V-8, with 611 horsepower and stiffer, more track-biased chassis calibrations. The standard 570S weighs just 2,895 pounds, but expect that figure to drop to around 2,750 pounds, thanks to a minimalist interior and more carbon fiber. A new body kit would differentiate the 620R visually and provide more usable downforce. It should all add up to a 0-60 time in the 3-second range and an unaltered top speed of 204 mph.

It might sound a little too close to the 650S in terms of performance, but by that time an entirely new Super Series McLaren will have arrived. Currently in development and internally designated P16, the next Super Series is slated to arrive in 2017 and could be powered by a hybrid powertrain consisting of a downsized V-6 engine and an electric motor.

Why it matters

In addition to the new Sports Series cars, McLaren also announced its second consecutive year of profitability, which is pretty impressive considering McLaren only started building road cars again in 2010. The company delivered 1,649 cars worldwide in 2014 and that number is expected to increase considerably once Sports Series production ramps up.
