So far, the SLS->ke2504 and GT->ke4853 are the only two ground-up cars we’ve seen from Mercedes-AMG->ke8 — both amazingly capable two-door sportscars->ke506 with savage V-8s. Now, new rumors suggest a four-door coupe->ke141 unique to AMG could be entering the fray, and it could be called GT4, at least according to German site Autobild.

AMG boss Tobias Moers recently discussed the idea at the 2015 New York Auto Show,->ke226 saying that such a car is feasible, but it wouldn’t be possible to share a platform with the GT, due to its space-frame chassis. Rather, it would likely use a downsized version of the next CLS->ke539 chassis and share the GT’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8, as the current CLS’s 5.5-liter V8 is on the way out.

But it’s hard to sell as a business case. Would such a car be able to sufficiently distance itself from the much cheaper and nearly as competent C63? Would the GT4 be sold concurrently with the GT? Yeah, lots of questions surrounding this car, least of which its name.

Why it matters

About that name: GT4. You might remember just a few short months ago when Aston Martin->ke13 introduced a racy version of the Vantage,->ke4410 called the Vantage GT3. Porsche didn’t like that very much. Despite there being an FIA recognized class called GT3, the German company felt the name infringed upon its 911 GT3->ke617 road cars. The situation was resolved amicably behind the scenes, which resulted in Aston changing the name of its car to GT12.

Aston introduced that car at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show,->ke228 which happened to be the same show in which Porsche->ke1 unveiled the Cayman GT4 (can you see where this is going now?). GT4 is also a class recognized by the FIA, but given Porsche’s position on the GT3 matter, we would say it’s unlikely Mercedes->ke187 would bother trying to use the GT4 name. Of course, Mercedes should probably green-light the project before it starts considering names.
