Mercedes’ not-so-mysterious Aesthetics Progressive Luxury Concept is a few days away from making its debut, and as expected, the German automaker isn’t wasting time generating some buzz ahead of the concept’s grand unveiling. Mercedes’ own design boss, Gorden Wagener, is the latest to drop a teaser of the Aesthetics Progressive Luxury Concept, giving us a shadowy close-up look of the car’s side profile.

The new teaser Mercedes design boss Gorden Wagener drops doesn’t give us a good shot at the car in its entirety, but it does show us a close-up look of the concept’s sleek body, ending just as the rear wheel arches start taking shape. Based on other teasers, we know that the Aesthetics Progressive Luxury Concept will be heavily inspired by 1930s Silver Arrows models. How Mercedes adapts that design ideology and gives it a modern twist is a big mystery at the moment.

What we do know is that the concept is nothing more than a show car with little of ever going into production. The German automaker hasn’t been shy in confirming that, even going so far as to say that the concept is treated as a gateway into what the company’s future electrification plans are. Most of you have probably noticed the hashtags that these teasers have come with. Whether its #SwitchToEQ or #eqsilverarrow, the goal of the Aesthetics Progressive Luxury Concept is tied into Mercedes’ push of its new EQ electric brand.

The timing of the concept’s debut ties into that line of thought, too. Mercedes’ EQ brand is close to releasing its first production model, the EQ C electric compact crossover that’s rumored to make its debut at the 2018 Paris Motor Show in October. The EQ C will serve as the pioneer model of the EQ brand, but it’ll soon be joined by a number of other all-electric models, including the EQ A and electric versions of the C-Class and S-Class.

The Aesthetics Progressive Luxury Concept may not take the same shape as the production models it’s opening its doors for, but don’t sleep on the raunchy exotic. For all we know, Mercedes’ decision to design it the way it did was all part of a long-arching master plan that puts the concept in a position where it can truly stand out. If that was the reasoning behind the concept’s debut at Pebble Beach, then consider it a job well done on the part of Mercedes.
