Nürburgring lap times are pretty damn important these days, with the top manufacturers duking it out at the Green Hell for bragging rights and a momentary spot in the limelight. Now, it looks like Mercedes is inventing its own record to grab more attention for the AMG GT 63 S.

Well, It’s Definitely Fast…

We would have liked to see a bit more data in certain sections, you know, like brake and throttle inputs, lateral g’s, etc., but overall, a time of 7:25.41 is impressive. A time like that makes the AMG GT 63 S quicker than such heavy-hitters as the Lamborghini Huracan LP 610-4 and Porsche Carrera GT, and for that, Mercedes has every right to be proud.

The most glaring issue is with regards to the Jaguar XE SV Project 8, another four-door sports sedan that claims superiority at the ‘Ring. Less than a year ago, Jag put the Project 8 around the track in a blistering 7 minutes, 21.23 seconds, beating the Porsche Panamera by 17 seconds and proudly claiming the title of fastest sedan to ever lap the infamous German race track.

So what gives, Mercedes?

Well, in an email to our friends over at Motor1.com, a Mercedes rep kindly explains that the record applies to “four-seater” vehicles, not just four-doors. The Jag in question only had two seats, with the record-running vehicle replacing the rear bench with a roll cage, thereby disqualifying it for a spot in the history books.

Fair enough. But a piece of advice, Mercedes - drop 5 seconds from your time, then make the press release. That way there’s no confusion as to who’s top dog.

By the way, if you’re watching the video, RIP to the bug that finds its fate on the Merc’s windshield at 2 minutes, 42 seconds.
