Why it matters

When Mercedes unveiled the SLS it was more of a limited-edition supercar to prove that AMG had the muscle and talent needed to stand on its own. Now that AMG has successfully built a car all on its own, the SLS project is being shelved in favor of a more attainable and better-selling machine: the AMG GT. This is a car that is targeted squarely at the royalty of the sports car market. The Porsche 911, Chevrolet Corvette and Jaguar F-Type are all sitting in its crosshairs. If Mercedes wants to effectively attack these cars in the marketplace, it needs to offer the same type of variants and model ranges. You can get all three of those sports cars with engines of various sizes and power outputs as well as manual transmission options and roofless versions. The Mercedes-AMG GT needs to offer the same to be successful.

Mercedes-AMG GT

The Mercedes-AMG GT is the second clean-slate car to come from the tuning arm of Mercedes-Benz. It shares a similar design style as the team’s first car, the SLS, but it's smaller, sharper and tuned for handling over comfort. It comes powered by AMG’s new, 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8. In base level trim this engine is good for 465 horsepower and 443 pounds of twist. In the faster GT S car, that engine has been turned up to 503 horsepower and 476 pound-feet of torque.
