Despite the overwhelming popularity of the Need for Speed franchise in video game form, the movie based on the series received a tepid response from U.S. audiences when it was released last year. In China, however, the film did much better, earning $65 million of the $200 million grossed worldwide. With that in mind, a sequel has been announced that will see filming in China, with support from Chinese production companies and featuring Chinese actors.

The new movie is part of a joint venture between China Movie Channel Program Center, Jiaflix Enterprises, 1905 Pictures, and Electronic Arts.  So far, no mention has been made regarding the return of Aaron Paul, Dominic Cooper or Michael Keaton, but production is expected to begin sometime later this year.

“We are excited to work with EA, one of the world’s most recognized creative companies,” said Yin Cao, chairman of China Movie Channel. “We are also delighted that much of Need for Speed 2 would be filmed in China, and we believe it will include much more Chinese talent and elements. This venture is another great endeavor to bridge the cultures between China and the West through films. We look forward to cooperating with excellent films and filmmakers to thrill and entertain movie lovers internationally with more outstanding films with Chinese labels.”

Why it matters

As the global media machine grinds onwards, joint ventures like this will undoubtedly become more commonplace. Lotus,->ke49 for example, recently announced a joint venture to build and sell models in China, which is currently the single largest car market in the world and still growing.

Maybe we’ll see other Chinese renditions of Western products, like a Chinese Fast and Furious or Mad Max. Or maybe the West will adopt Chinese influences. It’s all quite possible, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
