Days ahead of the debut of the PF0 electric supercar, Pininfarina has bared more details about its prized exotic. Pininfarina Design Director Luca Borgogno described the PF0 as a car that will be remembered for a long time. Given what’s already known about the concept — it uses lightweight carbon fiber body panels and can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in less than two seconds — it’s hard to imagine the PF0 being anything less than awesome.
Pininfarina - The American Dream
The Pininfarina PF0 is not a secret anymore. We know it’s going to make its debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. We also know that it’s going to have a streamlined interior that embodies the clean and simple design philosophy that Pininfarina’s head of design, Luca Borgogno, is touting. Most of the activity happens close to the driver. The steering wheel and digital instrument cluster are both compact. Both are flanked by digital displays that show all the pertinent details the driver needs to know about the car, including navigation data. A head-up display will also be located within the vicinity of the driver, taking the place of traditional buttons, switches, and knobs.
Details about the car’s exterior design remain the most mysterious item on the PF0. Thanks to the creativity of the company’s teasers, though, we have a pretty good idea of what we can expect from the electric supercar. The round cockpit looks to be a dead giveaway, and the thin headlights appear to run uninterrupted from one side of the car to the other. The car’s hood has multiple layers, and the front fenders are heavily teased in the shadowy renderings, suggesting that this concept’s design will be largely defined by them. Move to the back, and you’ll notice two massive fins that look as if they’re integrated into the rear fenders and wheel arches. Obviously, my interpretation of the concept could be very different from what Pininfarina unveils later this week at Pebble Beach. Still, I don’t think I’m going to be wrong when I say that the PF0 is going to be one of the main attractions this weekend.
If the concept’s design lives up to its hype, it’s going to make the car’s power and performance capabilities that much more special. Remember, Pininfarina said that the PF0 will be able to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in less than two seconds, a clear sign that its electric powertrain is going to have some serious power behind it. The car’s top speed is rather pedestrian at just 186 mph, but the concept is expected to carry a range of 310 miles, putting it in the upper-tier of electric vehicles as far as electric range is concerned.
About the only downside to the PF0’s debut this weekend is that the unveiling will be done privately and exclusively to people who have shown “significant interest” in buying any one of the 150 units that Pininfarina plans to build. Should you be one of the lucky few, you can expect the car to start production sometime in 2020. Pricing has yet to be determined, but who are we really kidding, right? The PF0 is going to cost a lot of money.
