Rumors of the next-generation Hyundai Genesis Coupe receiving a 400+ horsepower engine have been floating around for quite a few months now, but the Koreans have yet to confirm such awesomeness. That much power may come from the company's new twin-turbo, 3.3-liter V-6, which according to Hyundai->ke201, could match the V-8's 420-horsepower rating, but a new report claims the coupe->ke141 could receive a lot more power than that, thanks to the company's N Performance division.

According to The Korean Car Blog, quoting unnamed sources inside Hyundai, the turbocharged V-6 will crank out around 480 horses. If this turns out to be true, the range-topping Genesis Coupe will outgun most of its premium competitors in terms of horsepower, including the BMW M4 (425 horses) and the Audi RS5 (450 horses). The C63 Coupe S will be the only German to deliver more oomph at 503 horsepower. And needless to say, the 2015 Ford Mustang GT will be no match at 435 horses.

Could this be real? Well, I would grab a salt shaker under normal circumstances, but the mention of Hyundai's N Performance division makes this story a bit more credible. It's already known that the Koreans want to move up the premium ladder with the next Genesis Coupe, and a more powerful engine would make a lot of sense. Nowadays, premium isn't just about creature comforts, but performance as well. So here's to hoping!

Why it matters

Hyundai launched the N Performance division in late 2013, claiming it will use it to create "future mass-produced high-performance cars." But since the division has yet to spawn more than a rally car->ke191, which hasn't been very successful in the World Rally Championship->ke523, I haven't been able to asses whether N-badged Hyundai models will be as awesome as BMW's->ke178 M vehicles or just a bunch of fancy flops.

This new, range-topping Genesis Coupe might just be the answer to that question. The 480 horsepower looks tremendous on paper, but all that oomph needs to be put to good use through a light architecture, precise handling, and some of the i20 WRC's racing flair. I like what Hyundai has evolved into the last couple of years, but I'm not getting my hopes up until I see a press release with "480" "horsepower" and "BMW M4 slayer" in one sentence.
