Understeer is a bitch. Oversteer? Give us loads of the stuff, because if you know how to counter steer, you can rotate the car just fine with the throttle. But understeer, that thing where the car doesn’t turn? It’s the stuff of nightmares, especially on a track as dangerous as the Nürburgring.

The Full Story

The video of this latest sacrifice to the ‘Ring comes courtesy of the YouTube channel Auto Addiction, showing both the collision and the aftermath of the heavy shunt. Luckily, Auto Addiction reports that the driver was okay and managed to exit the car on her own.

The first ten seconds of the vid shows the white Scirocco in question exiting the previous corner at high speed, even tracking out onto the grass and getting a little sideways. The driver doesn’t have time to slow down for the next corner and turns in too early, a combination that puts the car on a collision course with the wall.

After overcooking the entry, the Scirocco loses frontend grip, and then spears into the wall at a 45-degree angle, catapulting it into the air. The car then rolls three times before coming to a stop on its roof.

After the heavy hit, the rest of the video shows the result of the grisly physics experiment, as the tow truck flips the poor VW back onto its wheels before hauling it off to the junkyard. Clearly, the VW is utterly and completely totaled.

Unfortunately, collisions like this are somewhat commonplace at the Nürburgring. Also known as the Green Hell, the ‘Ring is a high-speed, highly technical, and excruciatingly long racing circuit, and definitely a true challenge for any driver. At the same time, novice racers are frequently allowed to drive the track in their personal streetcar, and as you can see, the results can be… well, brutal.
