We're all smitten when it comes to the original Porsche 911,->ke282 the coupe->ke141 Stuttgart referred to as "the benchmark for all sports cars," but we often forget about the 912. Launched in 1965, two years after the 911 was announced, following concerns that the considerable price increase of the 911 with the flat-six engine over the 356 would impact sales and the narrow brand appeal, the 912 became Porsche'->ke1s entry-level sports car.->ke506 Unlike the 911, the 912 used flat-four units based on those offered in the 356.->ke666

Given that it had only 89 horsepower at its disposal, compared to the 128 horses of the original 911, it's not exactly surprising that the 912->ke3567 doesn't get the attention it deserves. But, what many car enthusiasts might not be aware of is that the 912 was actually quite the nimble sports car on top of returning an impressive 30 U.S. mpg on the highway. For reference, the 2015 911 Carrera is good for 28 mpg on the highway.

On top of that, the 912 initially outsold the 911, boosting Porsche's production until the latter became a successful product. The 912 was retired in 1969 and revived in 1975 for the U.S. market as the 912E, featuring the bodywork of the 911S.

Some might not like the 912, simply because it doesn't feature the iconic flat-six, but that won't stop owners from enjoying their four-cylinder 911s. One such owner is Antoine Gaslair, who drives a mint-condition 912 painted in Bahama Yellow. Check it out in Petrolicious' latest video.->ke278
