It's been only a month since Porsche->ke1 launched the Cayman GT4, the most powerful and track-focused Cayman->ke5 to date, and Stuttgart is already considering a more-aggressive version with an RS badge. That's the word coming from Porsche Motorsport chief Andreas Preuninger, who said the brand would build a Cayman GT4 RS should customers ask for one.

"This is just the beginning of the era. I would be interested in doing a Cayman GT4 RS version, but at the moment we didn’t even talk about such a thing. If the customers call for something like this we could think about it," Preuninger told journalists at the Geneva Motor Show,->ke228 according to Evo.

Needless to say, if customer demand is all it takes for the GT4 RS to become reality, Porsche might as well go ahead and build one. "We underestimated the success of the Cayman GT4, which shows that we were right with the concept. In England, within three days, two years of cars were sold. It happened in Sweden, it happened in Germany…everywhere," Preuninger added.

With the GT4 already a hit, it's only a matter of time until Porsche enthusiasts will start asking for a more-powerful version. It would also make sense for the Cayman to benefit from the same lineage as the high-performance 911,->ke282 which would include a range-topping RS version.

Why it matters

"We put a manual in it for good reason – to show people that we listened," Preuninger went on to explain the decision to only offer a stick on the GT4. Judging by this statement alone, it seems Porsche Motorsport is now more sensitive to its customers' demands, which didn't quite happen when the Germans decided to equip both the 911 GT3 and GT3 RS with PDK transmissions. That said, Porsche is likely already pondering a more-powerful version of the Cayman GT4. I have no doubt an RS-badged GT4 will be received with great enthusiasm by Porsche fans the world over, while, at the same time, it will cement the Cayman's reputation as a strong performer in Porsche's lineup. It's obvious that Stuttgart actually needs the Cayman GT4 RS!

But how would a GT4 RS stand out next to the already awesome GT4, you may ask? Well, the recipe should be similar to the one Porsche used to create the 911 GT3 RS. The GT4 RS would only differ slightly on the outside due to minor aerodynamic tweaks, but weigh less while employing an uprated engine. Given the 3.8-liter flat-six in the GT4 can deliver up to 430 horsepower in the 911 GTS, I expect Porsche to use the same mill for the GT4 RS, but perhaps detuned to around 410 horsepower. The GT4 cranks out 385 horses. As a result, 0-to-60 is likely to drop from 4.2 to just under four seconds, while top speed could increase from 183 to 185 mph. Meanwhile, however, the GT4 RS is still on the drawing board, which means a lot of factors can change before a production car arrives, likely not sooner than 2016.
