Classic Porsches are often the most restomodded vehicles in the industry. Between companies like Singer, Canepa, and even Paul Stephens, restoring classic Porsche has become its own business. Still, nobody does it better than Porsche itself, and the automaker’s latest project, called Project Gold, is slowly taking shape. Porsche Classic is at the front and center of the project and, while we still don’t know the full scope of the build, a few teaser videos have come out, giving us a taste of what’s to come.

To be clear, Project Gold is not the name of the car that Porsche Classic is restoring. Porsche hasn’t revealed the model that’s the subject of the restoration, but from what the teasers have shown, the whole project appears to be based on a Porsche 911 Turbo - a 993 generation model to be specific. If that’s the case, the 911 Turbo (993) is as good a model to restore, at least when you consider the kind of cult following it has established over the years as the last air-cooled 911 Turbo and the first 911 Turbo to use all-wheel-drive.

The 911 Turbo (993) also came with a 3.6-liter twin-turbo boxer six engine that produced 402 horsepower, a staggering number when you consider how old this model is relative to the amount of power some current Porsche models have at their disposal.

Porsche has succeeded in keeping other elements of Project Gold under wraps, but it has extended a few details for us to figure out, including a few surprises that involve the use of gold trim on the exterior and interior of the car to go with a laser removal technique on the wheels and some fancy handstitched wizardry in the interior.

Through it all, we still don’t know enough to make an educated guess as to what Porsche Classic has in store for us. The mystery behind the model is better, though, in some ways. It keeps us excited and intrigued by the final product. Fortunately, we don’t have to wait long to see it because it is scheduled to be revealed on August 24, presumably at the Monterey Car Week.
