Four years ago, Italian coach builder Zagato unveiled the Lamborghini 5-95 Zagato, a one-off creation that spawned into a limited edition series because deep-pocketed customers couldn’t get enough of it. Fast forward to 2018, and we could be in for a case of déjà vu. Sitting on Zagato’s website for all the world to see is a rendering of the Lamborghini L595 Zagato, a droptop version of the 5-95 Zagato that we saw in 2014. It’s unclear if Zagato has plans to build this version, but the image was accompanied by “2018,” a sign that we could see this car come to life sometime this year.

I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself, but it is exciting to see something like this pop up from out of nowhere. A Lamborghini 595 Roadster would be cool for all the same reasons that made the coupe version cool when Zagato unveiled it at the 2014 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este as part of its 95th-anniversary celebration. That car blew so many people away that Zagato’s initial plan to build a one-off was thrown out of the window because so many people liked it so much. It’s unclear how many units Zagato ended up building, but there definitely is more than one of them in the world today.

It’s easy to see why demand for that car spurred Zagato to create a number of them. It was based on the Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera, but it had a completely reworked front section that included a more elaborate integrated headlights setup and a round front fender that eliminated the two air intakes the Gallardo had. The intakes are still there, but in a different configuration than what we’re used to. The coachbuilt Lambo also featured a floating spoiler on the front section, something that Zagato said at that time was inspired by the Raptor, another one of its Lambo-based creations. The 5-95 also came with a 5.2-liter V-10 engine that produced 570 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque.

It's not that hard to imagine that Zagato would create the 595 Roadster in the same way. It would have to find a Gallardo LP570-4 Spyder Performante, so that’s going to be tricky. But if it can get its hands on one, or maybe a number of them, we could be in for a real treat.

Here’s what I know: the 2018 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este takes place from May 25 to May 27 at Lake Como in Italy. It’s possible that Zagato could return to where it unveiled the 5-95 back in 2014 and bring its drop-top sibling to the show. Don’t take my word for it, though, because there’s been no confirmation from the company. But it is getting me excited just thinking about what the 595 Roadster could look like in person.

Let’s all hope that even if it’s a few years late, the Lamborghini 595 Roadster is actually the real deal. If it is, you can be sure that a lot of people will be fighting over that one, too.
