VW->ke94 fanboys’ heads are exploding around the world right now, because Volkswagen’s chief powertrain engineer Heinz-Jakob Neusser has officially confirmed that the Golf R400 hyper-hatch->ke304 is headed for production. Furthermore, the all-wheel-drive, range-topping Golf->ke164 could produce even more than the 400 horsepower its name suggests.

Rumors about the R400 heading for production have been swirling for months, and apparently there was something to them. “We have the Golf more sporty than ever before, since we soon will have the Golf R400 - we will do this car,” Neusser told CAR Magazine. “We are in fact in development of it right now.”

According to CAR, the R400 will be available in a few short months, powered by the same 420-horsepower version of the 2.0-liter EA888 four-cylinder first shown in the Audi TT420 concept car. Given the prodigious power, all-wheel-drive is pretty much essential to prevent the tires from setting themselves ablaze.

Why it matters

As far as styling, CAR suggests the R400 will adhere to the relatively understated enhancements seen on the concept car. That means a new spoiler, lower front fascia with carbon inserts, rear diffuser and subtly flared fenders accommodating wider rubber. Bigger brakes will also be fitted and suspension settings more track-focused.

Expect to see a production R400 unveiled at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show->ke235 in September, with deliveries starting a few months after. Pricing is still a question mark, but rumors suggest around €50,000 or around $55,000 in the United States at current exchange rates.

Confirmation of R400 production doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be able to buy one in North America, but we would be surprised if it doesn’t make it to our shores. Considering the Gold R sold out within 11 hours of going on sale in the United States, we would say there’s plenty of demand here for an even faster Golf. Have fun, Volkswagen fanboys.
