Ram->ke4843 is finally taking the leash off the updated 2017 Power Wagon] and new Off-road trim for the 2500 HD 4x4 pickup->ke242 at the 2016 Overland Expo in Mormon Lake, Arizona on May 20 through 22. The two-day event is one of the most recognized overlanding events in the world, where folks can learn from experts in hands-on overlanding classes, check out trade booths loaded with new products, or just take in the vast expanse of the Arizona wilderness.

Ram’s full lineup of off-roading pickups will be there, including the Ram 1500 Rebel. Though the Rebel will certainly draw crowds, the Power Wagon and 2500 Off-road trucks->ke1311 will be Ram’s biggest stars. This marks the first public appearance since the two trucks’ debut at the 2016 Chicago Auto Show->ke225 last February.

The 2017 Power Wagon gets a heavy exterior refresh, bringing it more in line with the Ram 1500 Rebel. The black grille with bold RAM lettering dominates the front, while new Power Wagon-specific wheels and bedside graphics add interest to the side profile. Out back, even larger RAM lettering stretches across the tailgate, complete with a “Power Wagon” graphic down below. While there are no mechanical updates, the truck should now be more competitive with trucks like the Ford Raptor.

The new Off-road equipment package for the Ram 2500 4x4 isn’t nearly as “look-at-me,” but offers customers more off-road capability in their heavy-duty pickup. The package does this without compromising the Ram 2500 HD’s towing or hauling ability, and can be ordered in either Crew Cab or Mega Cab, with nearly any of the bed or engine configurations available, including the popular 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel. Customers can choose from nearly all the trim levels, as well, giving fleets a hardy option for rough-duty work.

Ram will host a press conference covering the trucks at the Overland Expo at 11 am on May 21 with a customer clinic to follow. If anything brews from the press conference, we’ll update you here.

Why it matters

Overlanding is a popular recreation that puts man and machine in the toughest environments for extended periods of time, traversing harsh terrain in the pursuit of exploration or simply escaping the grid of modern society. Since Ram’s Power Wagon and 2500 4x4 Off-road trucks are designed for the roads less paved, it makes perfect sense for Ram to attend an event like this. Of course, Ram’s motivation is to garner attention for its products in hopes of landing sales, but hey, that’s business for you.

Regardless, I’m sure the folks at the 2016 Overland Expo will enjoy seeing the Ram Power Wagon and 2500 4x4 Off-road in person before anyone else.
