After eight years on the market in this generation, and 22 years since the nameplate was revived in Europe and North America, the Volkswagen Beetle is going into the history books for the second time. With production set to end in 2019, the German firm is bidding farewell to the funky two-door with a Final Edition model. The last of the A5-generation Beetle made its public debut at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Unique Features

Available in both hatchback and cabriolet body styles, the Final Edition is a U.S. exclusive model, so don't expect to find it in European showrooms. Offered in both SE and SEL trims, it features a bunch of extra features and a couple of unique colors inspired by models from the past. The Final Edition itself is actually inspired by the Ultima Edicion, the final edition of the first-generation Beetle made in Mexico in 2003.

There's Safari Uni, a light beige hue based on the Harvest Moon Beige, and Stonewashed Blue, a nod to the 1970 Jeans Bug and 2016 Beetle Denim. Other colors options include Pure White, Deep Black Pearl, and Platinum Grey. A unique Brown soft-top is offered with the Convertible Final Edition SEL model in every exterior color except Safari Uni.

Performance and Pricing

Other unique features include body-colored mirror caps, chrome exterior trim inspired by the 2003 Ultima Edicion, 17-inch wheels, and a sunroof for the coupe model.

Power comes from the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine as in the standard Beetle, so the Final Edition benefits from the same 174 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard on all versions.

Pricing for the 2019 Beetle Final Edition coupe starts from $23,045, while the convertible fetches $27,295 before options.
