Dutch automaker Spyker->ke84 has largely stayed off the grid for the better part of a few years now. The only thing we’ve heard about the company in that time was when it was restructuring its company to accommodate its new business partner, American electric plane manufacturer, Volta Volare. The time away from the spotlight seems to have done Spyker some good because the company is reportedly headed to the 2016 Geneva Motor Show->ke228 with an electric sports car->ke506 in tow.

Dutch news site Autovisie broke the story after discovering that Spyker was included among the list of exhibitors that will be in attendance at the auto show in Geneva. The site also noted the possibility that Spyder would introduce an electric->ke1030 sports car, something that would make some sense considering that its new business partner knows a thing or two about electric modes of transportation.

Adding more weight to this speculation is Spyker CEO Victor Muller going on record in the past of his intention to pursue vehicle electrification once the company’s business is in stable condition. While there’s still no official announcement on the kind of cars Spyker plans to being to the show, it makes sense to bring an electric sports car and showcase it on one of the biggest auto shows of the year. If there was ever a time to return to the auto scene with a bang, there’s no better place to do it than the Geneva Motor Show.

Why it matters

This is great news for fans of Spyker, myself included. I admit that I was one of those people who essentially didn’t think that the Dutch automaker was going to get out of the financial hole it was in. Even the introduction of Volta Volare as a business partner didn’t do much to convince me that Spyker was going to return to the company that produced some stellar creations like the C8 Aileron. When the company decided to lay low and fix its business operations, all those promises CEO Victor Muller made in the past were going to be left unaccomplished. It wasn’t the first time an automaker failed to live up to expectations, and Spyker appeared to be heading down that road.

So you can imagine my surprise when I learned that Spyker would be in attendance at the Geneva Motor Show. I still don’t know enough details to be completely excited about what to expect, but I do know that a partnership with a company that’s touting an “exciting new sustainable technology” would have some positive effects for the Dutch automaker.

The most likely scenario would be an electric sports car, but don’t sleep on the possibility of Spyker bringing an updated version of the B6 Venator, a model that the company has previously shown in coupe and spyder configurations in the past. Maybe the company is going to hit two birds with one stone and present a hybrid version of the B6 Venator that retains its V-6 powertrain and adds a pair of electric motors on the rear wheels. These scenarios are definitely in play and the exciting part about this is that Spyker could introduce an entirely new model altogether.

Don’t look now, but there’s finally some long-overdue excitement coming out of Spyker, something we thought we’d never get to see anymore.
