SsangYong isn’t typically the kind of automaker that makes a splash at an event like the Geneva Motor Show. But don’t tell that to the Korean automaker because not only is it in attendance in Geneva, it also brought with it a new pickup that’s looking to take a bite out of the European pickup market. The model is called the Musso, the same name the automaker uses on its affordable SUV. The new Musso pickup is a vehicle of its own, though, and its bringing loads of features on the table.

No one’s going to mistake the SsangYong Musso for a Ford Ranger, but no one really should. The Korean hauler isn’t concerned about comparisons to more established models in its segment. It’s concerned about making its own impression to consumers. On that note, the Musso pickup draws plenty of similarities to SsangYong’s Rexton SUV. Both models use the same architecture, and the pickup takes advantage of that with a body-on-frame construction that’s made primarily out of high-strength steel.

Functionally, the Musso has its share of useful features. It has a load deck with a rear for that folds flat, providing enough space for prospective owners to use. The design isn’t an issue for the model, either. It doesn’t generate any “wow” reactions, but it’s still good enough to get some attention. The interior is also well-prepared. The design is clean and direct to the point. The dash has a nice look to it, where it hosts a centrally mounted 8.0-inch touchscreen that comes standard across the entire range. There’s also DAB radio, Bluetooth, and MP3 connectivity. Opt for higher-grade versions, and you can score Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

On the performance side, the Musso has a lot to offer. The existing 2.2-liter turbo diesel unit now produces 181 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The numbers are impressive, but so is the fact that they represent an increase of five horsepower and 15 pound-feet of torque compared to the previous iteration of the e-XDi220 unit that SsangYong built from the ground up internally.

Overall, the new SsangYong Musso pickup has the chops to be a solid pickup in the market. It’s not going to dominate the sales charts by any means, but it does bring a lot to the table, something that most people will agree is the most important part of being a pickup.
