It looks like Suzuki hit a jackpot with the Jimny. It has garnered a lot of attention, thanks to its small yet rugged off-roader status. Just when we thought we had seen it all and the excitement was slowly sinking in, Suzuki decided to play with the Jimny a little more, and the result is simply fantastic.

What Is This Concept All About?

Suzuki will be bringing the Jimny Sierra Pickup Concept to the Tokyo Auto Salon next month. When viewed upfront, the first thing you will notice is that the stylized ‘S’ logo has been replaced with ‘SUZUKI’. The concept is based on the regular Jimny and has a small open bed in place of the enclosed cargo area. The Jimny Concept also comes with a set of off-road tires with beige-shade retro dog dish hubcaps that add to the character of the car. A set of recovery hooks hang off the front bumper that may or may not be functional. LED lights peeping above the cab gives the Jimny more of a pickup feel.

The Spec-Sheet

The company hasn’t given much in the way of powertrain detail on the Jimny Sierra Pickup Concept yet. The standard Jimny features a ladder frame with 3-link rigid axle suspension and an all-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer gear. It measures just 137 inches in length on an 88.5-inch wheelbase, thus enabling it to have a breakover angle of 28 degrees. For comparison, a 2-door Jeep Wrangler measures 164 inches and 95.4 inches respectively. On paper, the 1.5-liter engine may seem inadequate, but considering its power-to-weight ratio, the displacement seems to be more than enough.

Final Thoughts

Even though Suzuki does not sell its cars in the U.S., there remains a dealer network for bike and ATV sales. Given that the Jimny is an off-roader, much like ATV with car-like characteristics, could Suzuki sell the little Jimny through those dealers? If the Japanese giant can find a way around it, the U.S. could serve as a big market for the tiny machine. What are your thoughts on the Jimny and the Jimny Sierra Pickup Concept?
