53 years after introducing the Mustang, Ford has reportedly put the finishing touches on the 10 millionth Mustang ever built. Multiple reports have indicated that a huge announcement is imminent, possibly alluding to the historic milestone. Adding fuel to that fire are a couple of leaked photos taken by media personality Evan J. Smith, who claims that the Mustang in the photos he posted on his Instagram page, official_ford_guy, is, in fact, the 10 millionth Mustang.

If the photos taken by Evan J. Smith are, in fact, the 10 millionth Mustang, then it looks like Ford didn’t really do a whole lot in giving the car the distinction it deserves. From the outside, it looks like a nondescript V-8 Mustang GT Convertible wearing a Wimbledon White paint finish. There are no badges or plaques commemorating its status, at least as far as what we can see in the photos. There could be a few surprises, though, because if this is the 10 millionth Mustang, Ford isn’t going to waste an opportunity attaching timeless provenance on it, though the color it chose already has some historical reference to it.

Ok, so Wimbledon White isn’t an available color on this year’s Mustang. But it is the same color that Ford used on a pre-production convertible that it sold before the Mustang went on sale in 1965. In other words, the first Mustang sold is wearing the same color as the 10 millionth Mustang built. How’s that for historical symmetry?

It’s unclear if this Mustang is going to end up for sale, but Smith did include a hashtag that says #notforsale. Could it be that Ford built this Mustang with the specific intention of keeping it for itself? Considering its build number, it wouldn’t be surprising if Ford decides to send the 10 millionth Mustang straight to its archives. I know that’s what I’d do if I was running the show over there at Dearborn, Michigan.

In any case, an announcement is expected to be made in the coming days, and you can be sure that we’re going to be all over it. There are even rumors that the 10 millionth Mustang will appear at the Woodward Dream Cruise, an annual gathering of auto mavens from all over the world. It’s also an event that Ford happens to sponsor. Regardless of where it ends up, it’s a great achievement for Ford to build its 10 millionth Mustang. Not many cars make it to 100,000 builds, let alone 1 million. But 10 million? That’s all the reason in the world to celebrate.
