The 2018 Chevrolet Traverse is all new, and while most reports focus on its longer wheelbase, the new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in the RS trim, the new nine-speed automatic transmission, and the crossover’s new design, the Traverse’s number of storage options shouldn’t be overlooked.

I took the new Traverse on a 1,600-mile road trip over the recent Thanksgiving holidays. All three rows were packed with people, luggage, and the random junk that tends to accumulate on a long drive. Cups, napkins, phones, charging cables, sunglasses, iPads, and even Lacrosse sticks were all present by end of our 12-hour travel day. But thanks to the 2018 Traverse’s wildly functional interior, everything had its own place.

There are no less than eight cup holders, eight USB ports, and three separate compartments in each door panel. The rear doors have five compartments. Pockets in the seatbacks of the front seats make a great iPad hiding spot, and the hidden storage compartment behind the 8.0-inch MyLink touchscreen is a smart place to store valuables. It’s even lockable with a four-digit pin.

As for larger items like those Lacrosse sticks, they fit perfectly in the under-floor compartment behind the third row. The area still had plenty of room for other items, too. We ended up putting an entire soft-sided duffle bag in there. If it came to hauling more cargo than people, the Traverse’s rear two rows fold flat for 98 cubic feet of storage volume. Even with the third row in place, the Traverse still boasts 23 cubic feet of room.

All told, the 2018 Traverse proved its worth at catching all the crap that tends to accumulate during a trip. It also proved easy to clean with a simple damp cloth over the plastic and leather bits and a vacuum over the black carpet. Storage and cleanability – two very important aspects of any family vehicle and something the 2018 Chevy Traverse has in spades.
