The Porsche Macan, the same model that is currently offered with four- and six-cylinder engines, will officially be offered as an electric model when the new-generation makes its debut in 2021. You read that right, the Porsche Taycan isn’t even technically on the market yet, and Porsche is already committed to turning one of its most popular models into EV territory. And, that’s not a rumor- the cam directly from Porsche itself. The most logical reason behind this is because BMW is set to unleash the BMW iX3 soon and, since the Macan battles it out with the X3, it only makes sense. As of now, there are no plans to offer any type of fuel-powered drivetrain, so the Macan will become Porsche’s third EV next to the 2020 Taycan and the 2021 Taycan Sport Turismo wagon.

What Do We Know About the 2021 Porsche Macan EV?

Outside of the fact that the second-generation Macan will be all electric, we don’t have much to go on at this point. Just like most electric vehicles on the market (or that will be in the near future,), the Macan Ev will be offered in different trim levels with different power outputs and available range. Maximum range will top the 300-mile mark while entry-level models will probably be pinned at around 240 miles of range.

Porsche has actually been developing the next-gen Macan for a couple of years now, so the current model was only a couple of years old at best when Porsche designers were given the green light with a clean sheet of paper in hand. It will ride upon the new Premium Platform Electric, aka PPE, that’s being developed by Porsche and VAG. This is actually different from the J1 platform that will underpin the Taycan and Taycan Sport Turismo, and will probably be used on other models in the future. PPE is designed with flexibility in mind and is said to be able to support vehicles with high and low ground clearance as well as those with different wheelbase and track widths.

With all of this in mind, the Macan is essentially the second stepping stone in Porsches future EV onslaught. The PPE platform could go into service for electric versions of the 718, Cayenne, and the next-gen Panamera as well. In the short term, however, it suggests that the third-gen Audi Q5 could also take the same electric route.
