We’re two days away from the highly anticipated first trailer for Avengers 4, but an early surprise was revealed at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show: the Audi e-Tron GT Concept will star in the blockbuster movie. Audi’s involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t a new plot. But it’s been a while since we last saw a prominent Audi appear in any of the recent MCU films. That’s about to change when the e-Tron GT Concept shows up in what could be the biggest blockbuster of the 2019 movie calendar. If history is any indication, Audi’s future flagship electric sedan will be the ride-of-choice of Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man.

Audi isn’t the only automaker that has appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But a case can be made that it’s the automaker that has had the most prominent involvement. The German automaker first appeared in Iron Man, the movie that officially kicked-off the MCU.

Since then, Audi’s models have also appeared in other MCU movies, including the Prologue Concept, which appeared in Captain America: Civil War. Most recently, Audi deployed the A8 and TT in Spider-Man: Homecoming, giving both models their own run in the spotlight. You can argue, though, that the Audi e-Tron GT Concept’s appearance in Avengers 4 is the most important cameo Audi has had, or will ever have in the MCU. You can even draw parallels to the e-Tron GT Concept’s upcoming cameo to that of the R8 when it appeared in Iron Man. Just like the e-Tron GT Concept, the R8 was a completely new — and unknown — model at that time. The model was Audi’s first foray into the world of modern supercars, and the German automaker took full advantage of the platform that the movie had to promote the R8 in ways that no commercial or print ad could ever do. Since then, the R8 has become one of the most prominent supercars in the industry.

It’s hard not to think of the similarities between the R8 and the e-Tron GT Concept. The latter is also a new concept that arguably serves a more important preview of Audi’s future. As we know it, the e-Tron GT Concept is Audi’s first venture into the all-electric performance sedan segment. It’s a segment currently dominated by Tesla, but that could all change once the production version of the e-Tron GT Concept arrives. Audi has said that the production e-Tron GT Concept is slated to begin “volume production” in 2020. As it stands now, the e-Tron GT packs a 90 kWh battery that has a range of 250 miles. It also comes with a pair of electric motors that produce a total output to 590 horsepower. That’s enough power to help the concept accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.5 seconds and 0 to 124 mph in 12 seconds. Top speed is capped at 149 mph for Audi’s version of a Tesla Model S killer.

If it ends up getting the same amount of recognition as the Audi R8 had in Iron Man, it could serve as a preview of what’s to come, not only for the production version of the concept, but for Audi’s entire all-electric car efforts. Avengers 4 arrives in theaters in the U.S. on May 3, 2019.
