The BMW X2 is not a perfect car. It may not even be the best BMW crossover in the German automaker’s lineup. But, it is worthy of our attention, not because of what it represents in today’s crossover-infatuated world, but simply because of what it is. BMW purists may cringe at the sight of another crossover diluting the brand, but there’s more to the X2 than meets the eye. You just have to know where to look.

Reviews of the X2 have poured in since the crossover made its debut in the latter part of 2017. By and large, the crossover has received equal amounts of applause and derision. Some of the reactions are fair. It looks sportier that the X1 — a good thing. It’s a better driver’s car than both the X1 and X3 - another good thing. On the other hand, it’s not the most comfortable BMW on the market today. The ride can be firm, and there’s something to be said for the shortcuts Bimmer took in dressing up the hatch. But, does it deserve the hate it’s been getting for representing BMW’s plan to produce as many crossovers and SUVs as it can to satisfy the insatiable thirst of a public that has gone gaga over the segment? It doesn’t.

The X2 shouldn’t be faulted for what it is. It’s a product of public demand, not automotive necessity. It’s not even an X1 that’s been wrapped differently and given a different name. For all the criticism surrounding the need to have an X2 when an X1 and X3 are already around, the new crossover is neither of its brethren. It has an identity of its own, one formed through clever design packaging and improved driving characteristics, at least when you compare it to the likes of the X1 and even the X3.

Say what you will about its place in BMW’s lineup, but it’s become clear that the X2 has earned its place. Purists may not like it, and that’s fine. They’re wired to protect the sanctity of BMW’s history and identity, so their gripes usually come from a place of good intentions. But, give the X2 a chance. British publication Express put the crossover through the paces and found a lot to like about it, faults notwithstanding. “The proof as ever is in the driving and the X2 does drive very differently to its nearest X models, which is all that many customers will need to hear or to know.”

Sometimes, you have to look past the limitations of your own beliefs and open yourselves up to a world where a car like the X2 can exist and thrive. It just so happens that the world we’re talking about is the one we're living in today. The X2 is here, and from the looks of it, it’s here to stay. Better get used to it.
