Mercedes-Benz is really ramping up its all-electric game as of late, debuting concepts like the EQ Silver Arrow at the 2018 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, plus the Generation EQ Concept at the 2016 Paris Auto Show. Now, Merc is moving into full production mode with the debut of its first all-electric crossover for public consumption.

The Full Story

The look is quite similar to what we’ve seen from the brand’s previous concept vehicles, and includes features like large black panels set against curvaceous body components. It definitely looks rather high-tech for a Mercedes, and is sure to draw some attention on the street thanks to things like optical fibers for the daytime running lights and LEDs for forward illumination. The aesthetic also incorporates a coupe-like profile and roof design, while the lighting structures stretch from side to side, enhancing the vehicle’s natural visual width.

The lighting scheme gives it a sci-fi vibe that’s totally new for Mercedes, but the wide center console, digital dash readouts, and sumptuous upholstery are all things we’ve seen before from Mercedes in the past.

As expected, Merc says the EQC seeks to be quiet and comfortable, both of which are attributes the all-electric drivetrain will undoubtedly assist with. What’s more, the crossover comes with a slew of EV-specific infotainment system features, plus the very latest safety and convenience tech as well, both of which will likely trickle down to the rest of the line.

The EQC’s powertrain consists of a lithium-ion battery pack and dual-motor setup, with AWD grip and handling thanks to a single motor for the front axle and a second motor for the rear axle. Flat out, the EQC can hit 60 mph in less than 5 seconds and achieve a top speed electronically limited at 112 mph.

Mercedes claims “flexible and fast” charging with the EQC’s onboard 7.4-kW plug, which is described as suitable for “AC charging at home or at public charging stations.” The EQC also includes DC quick-charging capabilities as standard, and can go from 10 to 80 percent battery capacity in roughly 40 minutes.

Peak range is pegged at 200 miles, which, compared to the 237 miles to 289 miles offered by the Tesla Model X, isn’t really that much. Still, for quicker around-town errands and trips, buyers will most likely be comfortable with it. Plus, it’s a Mercedes, and badge presence can be a major factor in sales in this segment.

What’s more, Mercedes will surely up its EV powertrain tech in the future, especially with regards to its new Formula E entry for the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

Offering an SUV as its first all-electric powertrain is an interesting choice for Mercedes. Not only is the body style absurdly popular these days, but the addition of a green powertrain to the lineup should help to the EQC become more things to more people.

“With the EQC - the first full electric SUV from Mercedes-Benz - we are flipping the switch,” said Chairman of Daimler AG and CEO at Mercedes-Benz, Dieter Zetsche. “Electric drive is a major component in the mobility of the future. We are therefore investing more than 10 billion euros in the expansion of our EQ model portfolio, and more than 1 billion euros in global battery production.”
