The Beijing Auto Show is now in full swing, so we’re naturally seeing a whole bunch of models dedicated to the Chinese market. Models like the Audi Q5 L and Mercedes A-Class L, for example, have taken the main stage. Then there’s MG Motors which has brought its latest concept called the MG X-Motion. It’s an all-new model from MG, and it’s said to represent the brand’s “Emotional Dynamism” design philosophy. It’s set to be the largest model in MG’s portfolio assuming it goes into production and will also serve as a flagship model, assuming it goes into production, anyway. So, what is there to the MG X-Motion Concept? Keep reading to find out!

The MG X-Motion is as Mysterious as it is Interesting

Remember the E-Motion Concept from last year’s auto show in Beijing? Well, if you saw it, you wouldn’t have forgotten it because it was pretty amazing in its own right. It was a bit futuristic, but it wasn’t outside the realm of possibility. This time around, the brand brings an SUV that follows the same design principals but is packaged to fit right in with the ever-growing SUV trend – one that will inevitably grow larger as more and more EVs come to market. MG hasn’t given us a whole plethora of information on this concept, but the first thing that popped right out was the front end. It seriously looks like a cross between a Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 and a new Mazda 6. For real – if that grille doesn’t scream Mazda 6 then you’re outright crazy because it looks like it was plucked straight off of one 10 minutes before the show doors opened.

MG’s own design, however, comes into play further up where a custom LED design gives the headlights a unique look, and the muscular hood just screams dominance. Despite the fact that the massive grille distracts from the fact that this is an EV, those bottomless-pit like corner intakes bring us back to reality with the LED rings that have become synonymous with about every EV concept that we’ve seen to date. The side profile features MG’s typical fluidic design styles so there’s not a lot of aggression there and we’ll tip our hat to the brand for managing to make the side view mirrors sexy. The wheels are also out of this world, but we sure do want a pair – there’s just something about the tweaked and twisty spokes and the red carbon-like accenting on each one.

Around back things get a little confusing. Are those exhaust outlets integrated into the rear fascia? Or is that some weird, high-sitting, diffuser-like element? Well, we’re not really sure what it is, but those can’t be exhaust outlets because this thing is supposed to be all-electric. The aggressiveness is a nice touch and accent’s the otherwise smooth body quite well. Those taillights also look pretty damn familiar, but we’re not going to tell you from where, but if you’ve paid attention, you’ve probably already figured it out.

As far as performance goes, MG has kept all of that info filed away in its top-secret archives. In other words, MG hasn’t said anything about it. It’s the same story for the interior where MG didn’t even find it necessary to let us have a look. If we had to guess, we’d say that the interior is probably a slightly different variation of what we saw in the E-Motion concept, but that’s just speculation so don’t take it too seriously. MG did say that the concept (or future production model, we assume) will feature interconnection, intelligence, and information sharing, so it should fit right in with all of those connected cars we’ll be seeing after the turn of the decade.

Final Thoughts

I’ve got to had it to MG. They sure do make some gorgeous looking concepts. I’m not a fan of most of the vehicles the brand has on the market right now, but looking at the X-Motion and E-Motion concepts, it looks like MG could have a bright future and may even win its way into our hearts even more. MG claims that it’s on the up and up as far as sales and consumer approval, but we’ll see if that lasts as the brand starts moving these recent concepts closer to production. As of now, the X-Motion – like the E-Motion – is little more than a pipe dream as the brand has yet to demonstrate a true-to-life (and viable) electric drive system that will be sufficient enough to be accepted by the masses. It is parented by SAIC, however, so it shouldn’t be too hard for the brand to come by. I do have to say that this concept looks a little too familiar, though. After all, those corner vents scream Mercedes, and that grille was definitely jack moved from Mazda, but hey, the packaging does look good as a whole.

It will be interesting to see how the brand progresses over the next 10 years or so. As for the production version of the X-Motion Concept, well it’s destined for China, but MG Sales Boss, Danial Gregorious, has hinted that it could come to the UK in the future.
