There was news of Ford downsizing the Focus ST to a 1.5-liter, three-cylinder engine in the next-generation Focus, and also news of it upgrading to the RS’ 2.3-liter Ecoboost engine; but according to Motoring, it looks like Ford has balanced it out and retained the same 2.0-liter engine. Pushing the envelope a bit further, it looks like Ford is ditching the ST's unique manual transmission in favor of an automatic. Playing it safe there, Ford?

The Six-speed Manual Transmission Is Gone

The 2019 Focus will come to the U.S. as a crossover-inspired model, like the one that’s already on sale in Europe. This time, it’s not a facelift, but the fourth generation of the hatch. It’s got a better cabin and new cosmetic changes as well. The talking point, however, is the automatic gearbox. While there’s no official information yet, the new Focus ST might get either Ford’s new eight-speed torque converter, or the regular dual-clutch transmission. Either way, it will get paddle shifters - Some consolation at least.

Other Things That Matter

The present Focus ST comes with a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that churns out 252 horses and 270 pound-feet of torque. The new unit might get the same displacement in the EcoBoost guise; so expect a little more power and torque. Other prominent features include a multi-link rear suspension, a retuned version of the existing handling system, and 18-inch wheels to complete its profile. A 19-inch set can be also be availed.

Our Take

Yes, we know a major chunk of the population prefers automatic transmission to manual; but not in a hot hatch like the Focus ST! We know Ford needs numbers to keep up with the competition, but having a manual transmission in your lineup is a USP in itself. Ask BMW for better clarity. Nevertheless, will this actually help Ford sneak a lead against the Volkswagen Golf GTI and the Renault Sport Megane? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
