The production version of the next-generation Toyota Supra has yet to be unveiled, but the Japanese automaker has already built two race cars based on it. We saw the first one in concept form at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. Now, Toyota revealed that the Supra will compete in the NASCAR Xfinity Series starting in 2019.

Granted, NASCAR vehicles don't have too much in common with their road-going counterparts, but Toyota's new race car boasts some of the upcoming Supra's styling elements. Of course, all the features are only painted on the body, but we can see a similar nose, the same headlamps, taillights, and rear diffuser.

The Supra will replace the Camry in the Xfinity Series, but the sedan-based race car will continue to compete in the flagship Monster Energy Series. The new design has big shoes to fill, as the Camry won four manufacturer championships, two driver titles, and scored 147 wins since it entered the series in 2007.

Just like the Ford Mustangs and the Chevrolet Camaros raced in this competition, the Supra will ride on a tube-frame chassis and will use a carbureted, 5.8-liter V-8 engine.

The original Supra was raced in various series back in the day, including the IMSA series, Super GT, and even the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The new grand tourer will follow in the same footsteps, but its NASCAR entry is a first for the nameplate.

In related news, the production version of the road-going Toyota Supra is set to break cover at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed next week. Make sure you tune in for updates.
