The Lexus LF-1 Limitless Concept took the stage at the Detroit Auto Show, and it didn’t take long for the crossover concept to receive a groundswell of support from people who want to see it evolve into a full-fledged production model. Leading the charge was no less than Lexus’s general manager in the U.S., Jeff Bracken, who wasted little time championing for a production version of the LF-1 Concept minutes after taking the stage to unveil it.

Bracken’s enthusiasm for the LF-1 Limitless Concept clearly was on full display at the Detroit Auto Show. “We couldn’t be happier if we turned this into a production vehicle,” the Lexus U.S. general manager said. “It clearly is one of the most gorgeous concepts we’ve revealed.”

Beyond its aesthetics, which is admittedly incredible, the LF-1 Limitless Concept also has a few things going for it. According to Bracken, a production version of the concept is realistic because it would fill a missing spot in Lexus’ current model lineup. “We clearly have a gap at the high-end premium cross-utility segment,” he said. Should the LF-1 make it into production, it would slot in comfortably above the RX crossover, which sits as the automaker’s biggest crossover in the market today.

A new crossover that carries the concept DNA of the LF-1 could help round out Lexus’ entire crossover lineup, allowing it to have more models in the market that it can leverage to improve its sales volume in one of the most competitive segments in the U.S. The utility vehicle market continues to grow, so there’s enough potential for an LF-1 production model to become a practical offering for the company. Not only would it build Lexus’ crossover lineup, but it would also help create a good separation of identity between the company’s three crossovers. The NX would be the entry-level model, as it has always been since it arrived a few years ago. The RX would then take ownership of the mid-sized crossover segment, ceding the reins to the production LF-1, which will take over as the range-topping model of the lineup.

It’s unclear if Toyota and Lexus bigwigs will sign off on a production model, but the growing support for the LF-1 Concept could force Lexus’ hand into signing off on the model. Not that it matters. Judging from the growing support behind a production model, Lexus will have no trouble giving the green light to the LF-1 Concept if it does go that route.

A lot of people we talked to in Detroit said they’d like to see it happen. Apparently, high-level Lexus executives like Jeff Bracken also what to see it happen. Now, we wait and see if the company’s ultimate decision-makers are also on board with the idea.
