Almost two months before the model is supposed to officially debut at the 2015 New York Auto Show, a part of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro has surfaced online. To be fair, the part in question is not exactly from the upcoming Camaro but it is in fact a die used to shape the car's side body panel with a press, but that is more than enough to give us an under-the-sheet look at the all-new model, or at least the shape of its rear fender, roofline and quarter window.

While the rear three-quarter panel looks almost identical to the one from the current generation, there are distinctions. For one thing, there is more real estate between the rear quarter window and the wide shoulder line, making for a sportier-looking greenhouse-to-side-panel ratio. As some of you know, the next-gen Camaro->ke248 was already previewed as Bumblebee in "Transformers: Age of Extinction," and this body side die looks to be pretty much identical in shape to the one in the movie.

The man who posted the photo with the die in plain view is most likely a Chevrolet->ke199 worker, since the Facebook image was accompanied by a comment suggesting that. Obviously, he may have gotten in trouble for posting it as the photo was subsequently deleted, but not before the folks at Camaro6 snatched it and made it public.

Why it matters

The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro is expected to be unveiled in April at the earliest, which would make a for a market launch sometime at the end of 2015, although there is a possibility that GM may choose a later date. According to recent rumors, the model may shed some weight compared to the current generation, but you shouldn't expect it to be a featherweight. It is believed that the base 2016 Camaro will feature a turbocharged, two-liter, four-cylinder engine borrowed from the Cadillac ATS, to battle the Ford Mustang 2.3 EcoBoost, but nothing has been confirmed.

The naturally aspirated, 3.6-liter, V-6 will remain the mid-level powerplant, while the Camaro SS is likely to switch from the current LS3 to a version of the LT1 V-8 from the latest Corvette.->ke1280 Around 450 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque are expected for the Camaro SS, but that is not the only tech news. The all-new eight-speed automatic transmission used by the Corvette and Cadillac products is bound to be offered as an option in the 2016 Camaro, making for a more efficient sports car in terms of both performance and fuel economy.
