Audi has just unveiled its first full-electric offering, the e-tron SUV. To go with that debut, the brand also announced plans to have no fewer than 12 EVs in its range by the year 2025. These models will apparently range in size from compact to full-size, and there’s a good chance most will be high-riding vehicles - the brand's SUV- and crossover-centric approach is clear based solely on the first all-electric model they chose to launch.

The Next Audi EV

Next in line will be another SUV, the e-tron Sportback, which will make its debut next year. After that, the automaker will also launch more traditional body styles that bare Avant and Sportback designations.

The e-tron and e-tron Sportback SUVs will use a variation of Audi’s modular longitudinal platform, but the production version of the e-tron GT concept will use a different one, and two additional platforms will be used to underpin the remaining number of planned electric vehicles. One will be the result of a joint development effort split between Audi and Porsche, and it will bear the Premium Platform Electric (or PPE) name.

The plan is for it to be used in a series of new models (both SUV and more traditional body styles) and since it is also modular and specifically designed to be used in pure-electric vehicles, it will help shed weight and allow for greater use of available space by engineers and designers.

Called MEB (an abbreviation of its German name which translates to Modular Electrification Kit) it is a huge deal for the group. It is an important part of its plan to have no fewer than 300 all-electric models across all its 12 VAG brands by 2030.

These include all production versions of VW’s I.D.-badged concepts, the first fully-electric SEAT model (slated to arrive in 2020), as well as the series model based on the Skoda Vision E study (also set to debut in 2020), and a small Audi-branded SUV.
