The seaside of Nice, France became the horrifying scene of another terrorist attack when a 31-year old driver plowed a commercial truck through a crowd attending the Bastille Day festivities at the Promenade des Anglais. The man, identified as Tunisian-born Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel was eventually gunned down by the police, but not before he ran over and killed 84 people, including at least 10 children, and injured hundreds more.

French authorities identified Bouhlel as a convicted criminal who was in criminal court as recently as March 2016. Despite this disturbing revelation, Bouhlel had no links to any terrorist organization and was not under surveillance. Regardless of his connections, or lack there of, his actions have been deemed by French president Francois Hollande as a terrorist attack.

The horrifying attack just before 11 P.M. local time on Thursday, July 14. Thousands of spectators had gathered at the Promenade des Anglais for the start of the traditional fireworks high above the Baie Des Anges. At about 11 P.M., Bouhlel turned left onto the Promenade des Anglais and over the next three minutes, proceeded to run over as many people as he could. It only took four minutes before French police managed to shoot and kill him, but that was all it took for him to kill and injure dozens of innocent people. The death toll currently stands at 84.

It goes without saying that our hearts are broken for the families who lost their loved ones because of this despicable attack. There’s absolutely no room for this kind of evil in this world and we are one with everybody else in praying for those who lost their lives and those battling for theirs in the hospitals.

Why it matters

This is well beyond the auto industry, but we’re still doing this because its importance transcends anything that’s going on in the auto world right now. There’s really no going around it. This is devastating and heartbreaking.

For someone to use a truck to kill people is beyond comprehension. This is the work of someone who has an evil mind. There’s no excuse for what the low-life did to those innocent people who got caught up in his madness. These people were celebrating one of France’s most important holidays and end up getting killed by a nutcase that was reportedly suffering from depression? It’s really hard for us to wrap our minds on that thought because there’s no rhyme or reason for doing this.

And now, 84 people are dead and hundreds more are in hospitals battling for their lives. Is this something that innocent people should be going through? It’s ridiculous and it’s just upsetting beyond belief.

There really is not much to be said other than what’s been said already. We at TopSpeed send our heartfelt condolences to those who lost their loved ones because of the actions of one demented individual. It may not mean much in the grand scheme of things, but rest assured, our thoughts and prayers are with France today.
