It’s been a while since TVR has made waves in the auto industry. Actually, it’s been more than a decade since the company has had a car in the market. Fans of the brand have waited long enough to see the return of the TVR nameplate, and if a new report proves to be true, all that waiting may finally come to an end. Remember the TVR Griffith produced from 1991 to 2002? Well, it’s been 25 years since the sports car debuted, but recent trademarks of the Griffith name could point us to new model taking shape, one that will make use the famous nameplate.

Granted, the company’s new ownership group, TVR Automotive Ltd., has been coy about its plans for the car, but sources told Autocar that there’s growing momentum within the company to return to the auto scene. What better way to do it then than to unveil a sports car that will take the name of one of the company’s most decorated models. Other possibilities remain though, including the option of using an entirely different brand name altogether with new models in the fold. Trademarks aside, the new TVR sports car is expected to make its debut sooner than later, possibly as early as September this year at the Frankfurt Motor Show. No matter how these decisions shake out, it’s good to see TVR back in the auto scene. It’s been a while.

It’s a long time coming

Those who are old enough to remember the TVR name will often wax poetic about the British brand that rose to prominence on the back of specialized sports cars ranging from coupe to convertibles. History will even point to the fact that at one point in time, TVR was the third-largest specialized sports car manufacturer in the world, a status that has since faded into the memory of the company’s holdover fans.

These days, the brand that once wore the TVR badge proudly is on stable ground, or at least since its Les Edgar-led TVR Automotive Ltd acquired it back in 2013. The new owner’s goal was to bring the brand back to prominence, and while it may have taken longer than people thought, the wheels are now spinning for the company to make a triumphant return. That’s great news for fans and it could get even better with the introduction of the first sports car under the company’s new ownership. The car’s debut is expected to take place in Frankfurt later this year and based on current rumblings, there’s a good chance that it could use the revived Griffith name that we haven’t seen since 2002.

From a branding standpoint, Griffith is as good a choice as any for the company’s first sports car. Not only does it sound inherently cool, but it also has strong ties to TVR’s history. The recent trademark of the name (the second time TVR has done it since 2015) also points to what can only be described as legitimate interest to use it. The car itself is already shaping up to be a good one. It’s going to feature a Cosworth V-8 engine that produces 400 horsepower and weigh just 2,645 pounds, or about 1,200 kilos. Put these numbers together and the sports car is tipped to sprint to 60 mph in just under four seconds before peaking at a top speed in excess of 200 mph.

On the pricing end, rumor has it that TVR will introduce a $110,000 Launch Edition model before the production models hit the market, the latter of which is expected to arrive sometime in late 2018.
