USF1’s entry to Formula One took a bold step forward after the Charlotte-based outfit unveiled the first rendering of their new Type 1 Formula One car. It’s hard to imagine but it’s nearly been 50 years since the last US-built F1 car ever competed in a Formula One race, making this particular design – in the event that it does make it to the starting grid at Bahrain – historical of sorts.

According to Racecar Engineering, the Type 1 F1 car will be outfitted with a Cosworth CA2010 engine and that contrary to initial reports; the car will not come with a patriotic livery, which would have been a tad too cheeky if it did come out with the Stars and Stripes. In any case, Racecar Engineering was also able to spend some time with Team Principal Ken Anderson where they learned that USF1 has been using a ‘Skunk Works’ operation, taking advantage of the multitude of relevant industries present in the US that the team could tap on to aid their burgeoning F1 operation.

There’s no word yet on when the official USF1 car will be unveiled but judging from the progress they’ve made, the prospect of seeing a US-built F1 car out on track is becoming more and more likely.
